New Construction Multifamily Residential Energy Code Changes for the 2021 and 2024 code cycles in Maryland:  MEP and Architectural Design Strategies

by Grimm + Parker Architects and Allen + Shariff Engineering

Energy Codes and jurisdictional sustainability, or “green” requirements, continue to evolve and update every year it seems, and the changes to the 2021 and 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), are no exception.  This course will review some of the most impactful changes relating to new construction multifamily residential projects.  Specifically, we will review the more recent requirements that potentially require the use of energy recovery (IE: the implementation of Energy Recovery Ventilators – ERV’s) within individual apartment units.

We will review changes to COMcheck software interface, and the newly required “Additional Energy Efficiency Credit Requirements” you will need to document for projects that fall into the Commercial Energy Code provisions when utilizing the “Prescriptive Compliance Pathway” (IE: 2021 IECC Section C406.1).

We will also discuss the optional Energy Rating Index IECC-compliance option for dwelling units.

We will cover recommended design strategies for accommodating ERV’s within apartment units to avoid complicated fire-rating detailing issues, and to allow for easy access and service.

We will also review the required controls, and maintenance accommodations that also must be utilized when using energy recovery equipment on a multifamily residential project.

We will lastly showcase a case study where, an already high-performing multifamily project pursuing various sustainability programs to achieve LIHTC funding, by utilizing the “Performance Compliance Pathway” available in the IECC, was able to avoid the integration of ERV’s on their project.

Attendees may receive 1 AIA Elective Learning Unit
