Award Category Definitions
Traditional homes combine practicality and accessibility with a classic look. Functionality is one distinguishing feature of a traditional home along with simplistic design. Most often, this home will have few embellishments on the exterior.
Contemporary homes often share common design elements such as strong, geometric shapes, oversized windows allowing for extensive natural light, asymmetrical facades and open floor plans with minimal doors and walls.
Transitional homes blend traditional and contemporary styles, incorporating lines that are less ornate than traditional designs, but not as severely basic as contemporary lines. They are sometimes described as contemporary or ranch open floor plans transitioning to traditional with exterior details. The focus is on simplicity and sophistication of the design.
Green homes are designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, while focusing on the efficient use of "energy, water, and building materials” and also being healthy and comfortable for its occupants. Some features of a green home are: components made from renewable or recycled resources, energy & water efficient appliances, solar panels, and placement of windows to maximize interior light and ventilation.
